Become an Approved Driving Instructor

The course structure, an overview:

At ADI Training Direct we work closely with the highly experienced and professional BDA Driving School specialised in training potential instructors, you are in very patient and friendly hands. Here is an overview of what to expect:

Part 1 – Theory

This consists two sections; firstly you have the theory test - 100 assorted questions from 4 categories, you are required to achieve over 80% in each of the 4 categories whilst still achieving over 85% overall

Secondly you will have a hazard perception test - 14 video clips with 15 hazards in total, you are required to score over 57 out of 75.

The 4 categories are:

1. Road procedures
2. Traffic signs / signals / car control / pedestrians / mechanical knowledge
3. Driving test / disabilities / law
4. Publications / instructional techniques
   
   

Part 2 – Practical test of your personal driving abilities

To pass you must drive to a high standard of competence, demonstrating the principles of eco friendly driving and a well planned, positive, progressive drive adhering to and attaining national speed limits where safe and where possible. Over 1 hour you will also be asked to complete a variety of manoeuvres demonstrating control, accuracy, and effective observation.

Start working – Trainee licence

Once you have passed your part 2 and have completed a minimum of 40 hours training toward your part 3 you could chose a trainee licence (also known as your pink badge) allowing you to gain valuable experience with real learners whilst also starting to earn real money.

Part 3 – Practical test of your instructional abilities

This assesses the quality of your instruction and your ability to pass on your knowledge to a variety of pupil types. This test has 2 parts each being half an hour long and you must pass both parts on the same test. Your examiner will play the part of a pupil to whom you will give a practical driving lesson.
